RIGHTS OF PRISON
Punishments are scary and we have somewhere, sometime faced some type of punishment right from childhood, punishment from mother for not eating food, punishment from dad for not listening, punishment from teachers for not doing assignments. Punishments are given to us or any child so that we don’t repeat the mistakes.
India is creating its place at the top in the crimes, the graph of crime are getting up day by day according to Nation Crime Bureau Reports. When a crime happens the important roles are played by the courts where the criminals are punished as per the law so that they do not commit the crime again.
The punishment is differently mostly the criminals are put behind the bars (Jails/Prison) now according to Indian Constitution everyone enjoys certain fundamental rights but the prisoners cannot enjoy all the rights, but they too have certain rights of which utmost care must be taken by the police officers.
Being from Human Rights as a district organizer I have seen many of the prisoners are restricted from their rights. I visited personally some Prisons where I came across many issues of the prisoners.
RIGHTS OF PRISONERS
·
Right to physical and moral
integrity: Where I saw the prisoners are not treated as human,
according to Indian Constitution Prisoners have right to be treated with
respect, as all the death happened inside the prison are done due to ill-treatment
of authorities. The prisoners can file a complaint if they face any dis respectable behavior by the co-prisoners or the jail authorities. All the
deaths in the prison will be properly investigated.
· Right to an adequate
standard of living: talking to one of the prisoners I came across,
that these prisoners are not provided with quality food &drinking water and
at times they are not at all provided, according to Article 21 of Indian
constitution every person including the prisoners has the right to get basic
necessity including shelter too. That’s why if there is a violation of such
rights, the consequences have to be faced.
· Health Care Rights:
I also came across a prisoner suffering from viral fever, every prisoner has a
right to have a monthly medical checkup, if found with any physical or mental
illness should be a concern with the doctor. Every authority should have well
occupied medical room for the prisoners. Moreover, every prisoner has a right
to have proper mental and physical health to perform the work.
· Prison should be a safe
place to live: Every person wherever he/she lives, feels the safe
place, the same way the prisons should be the safe place for the prisoners,
they should feel like home. They should not be threatened by the authorities.
