In Indian law, public interest litigation means litigation for the protection of the public interest. It is litigation introduced in a court of law, not by the aggrieved party but by the court itself or by any other private party.
Where can a PIL be filed ?
PIL can be filed either in High Court or Supreme Court depending on the situation. Both the courts have power to entertain the public interest litigation.It can be filed in District Court too under some circumstances
Advantages of PIL.
The main benefit of Public Interest Litigation is that it helps to serve the people at large. It is does not benefit the individual but instead it benefits the public and mainly the weaker section of the society, who cannot afford to move to the court in order to protect the Fundamental Right.
