What is Lok Adalat (People's Court) ?
Lok Adalat is one of the alternative dispute redress mechanisms, it is a forum where disputes/cases pending in the court of law or at pre-litigation stage are settled/ compromised amicably. ... There is no court fee payable when a matter is filed in a Lok Adalat.
What is the main purpose of Lok Adalat?
The main purpose of Lok Adalats is on compromise. When no compromise is reached, the matter goes back to the court. While conducting the proceedings, a Lok Adalat acts as a conciliator and not as an arbitrator. Its role is to persuade the parties to hit upon a solution and help in reconciling the contesting differences.
Who can go to Lok Adalat?
The Lok Adalat is presided over by a sitting or retired judicial officer as the chairman, with two other members, usually a lawyer and social Worker .
When was the first Lok Adalat set up?
The First Lok Adalat was held in Una city in Junagarh district of Gujarat in 1982
